Paso doble: A two-step Late Pleistocene range expansion in the Tyrrhenian tree frog Hyla sarda

چکیده

Abstract The Tyrrhenian tree frog, Hyla sarda, is an amphibian endemic to the islands (Western Mediterranean). Previous investigations of its Pleistocene evolutionary history suggested that it colonised northern portion current range, through a spatial diffusion process from Sardinia island, during last glaciation. However, southern and portions species’ range experienced markedly different climatic conditions Late Pleistocene, suggesting possibility unusual two-step demographic expansion. Here, we use Bayesian phylogeographic approaches locate ancestral area in characterise better component this expansion event. These analyses located for H. sarda populations along central-eastern coast within previously shown host suitable bioclimatic throughout Pleistocene. Historical reconstructions clearly showed growth fits well data, with expanding later than populations. harsher occurred glacial epoch, as compared Sardinia, likely delayed frog colonisation territories, associated growth.

Multiple lines of evidence for demographic and range expansion of a temperate species (Hyla sarda) during the last glaciation.

Many temperate species experienced demographic and range contractions in response to climatic changes during Pleistocene glaciations. In this study, we investigate the evolutionary history of the Tyrrhenian tree frog Hyla sarda, a species inhabiting the Corsica-Sardinia island system (Western Mediterranean basin). We used sequence analysis of two mitochondrial (overall 1229 bp) and three nuclea...

New Archaeological Evidences from the Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene Paso Otero 5 Site (Pampean Region, Argentina)

The archaeological knowledge of the early human occupations of the Pampean Region has improved through the finding of new archaeological sites dated between 10,000 and 11,200 RCYBP (Martínez et al. 2003; Politis 2003). Among them, Paso Otero 5 (Martínez 2001), chronologically located between ca. 10,000 and 10,400 years BP, is characterized by the presence of extinct megamammals and modern speci...

Colour and pattern change against visually heterogeneous backgrounds in the tree frog Hyla japonica

Colour change in animals can be adaptive phenotypic plasticity in heterogeneous environments. Camouflage through background colour matching has been considered a primary force that drives the evolution of colour changing ability. However, the mechanism to which animals change their colour and patterns under visually heterogeneous backgrounds (i.e. consisting of more than one colour) has only be...

Short Notes Genetic differentiation in two European tree frog (Hyla arborea) metapopulations in contrasted landscapes of western Switzerland

The survival of threatened species as the European tree frog (Hyla arborea) is strongly dependent on the genetic variability within populations, as well as gene flow between them. In Switzerland, only two sectors in its western part still harbour metapopulations. The first is characterised by a very heterogeneous and urbanized landscape, while the second is characterised by a uninterrupted arra...
